Italian writer and novelist. Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature in 1926. Born on September 27th, 1871 into a bourgeois family that supported her education first letting her attend primary school and after with a private tutor; women of that time were not allowed to continue their education beyond elementary studies. She was interested in literature which she pursued on her own.
Her first works included both prose and poetry. She became a very prolific writer; she not only wrote novels but also theatrical plays and was published in several magazines throughout her life. In 1916 her novel Ashes was made into a motion picture.
In her work she expressed strong and powerful images of love, pain and death. Her constricted catholic upbringing gives way to feelings of guilt and sin which formed part of her inevitable conscience of fatality. Grazia was able to convey a strong bond between places and people, where the landscape represents the mindset of the characters.
Sun in Libra with Moon in Pisces, there is search for the intangible as a way to be socially recognized. There is great deal of idealism of how society should be. To cope with the great disappointment this creates when the possibility of this idealized world in not possible, the creation of defense mechanisms are put in place, the capacity of oneself to not love again just not to be hurt again is here, very prevalent in life and in her writing. The feelings are locked away, the no possibility of finding personal rewards regarding emotional security by not opening up to hurt and pain. The way out is by the ability to communicate the opinions about the idealization of emotional security through a published medium… and maybe finding recognition through the professional life because it might just be to difficult to find in the personal one.
